Week 7 Power Rankings: 'AMERICAN IDOL' 8

What makes this year’s crop of Idols so interesting is that everyone left is actually pretty good.
“Rat Pack Week” made that clear, as each of the contestants made a play to energize a fanbase. Adam Lambert played the drama of “Feeling Good” expertly, using the control of his voice and his impressive range to sell a unique interpretation of the classic. Kris Allen’s “The Way You Look Tonight,” as Simon Cowell pointed out, was predictably nice and innocent – perhaps the polar opposite of Lambert’s more, um, worldly delivery. And Allison Iraheta, who maybe wouldn’t have to pretend to be nice and innocent, vamped up “Someone to Watch Over Me,” singing it well, though a little too eager to show off vocally instead of telling the story of the song, something mentor Jamie Foxx, who proved to be a pretty insightful coach, tapped into.
Foxx’s advice for Matt Giraud was right on target. However, Giraud couldn’t quite carry it out. Lowering the key was the right move, but Giraud really couldn’t handle the lower notes of “My Funny Valentine” properly.
Danny Gokey’s “Come Rain or Come Shine” was an uneven mess, moving from a boring middle to an over-sung end in a matter of measures. Of course, Gokey supporters (including the judges) will eat that up. Never mind if he believes it or if it was stylistically good. Winning at all costs is what matters to Gokey and seeing that drive appeals to a lot of his fanbase. That probably makes him the safest one of the bunch tonight.

THE RANKINGS

Adam Lambert, “Feeling Good”
Kris Allen, “The Way You Look Tonight”
Allison Iraheta, “Someone to Watch Over Me”
Matt Giraud, “My Funny Valentine”
Danny Gokey, “Come Rain or Shine”
